Arsenal Haven't Signed Anyone This Summer. That's Not Patience, That's a Problem.

Right, let’s talk about Arsenal. Because it’s mid-July, pre-season’s nearly here, and they’ve signed precisely nobody.

Everyone’s calling it “disciplined recruitment.” I’m calling it what it looks like from the outside: a club that keeps finding a reason to say no.

Bruno Guimarães — Newcastle want close to £100m, Arsenal are offering around £60m including add-ons. Morgan Rogers — Villa are holding out for a fee that’d break the British transfer record, and while personal terms are apparently progressing, that gap doesn’t close itself. Álvarez — talks have gone all the way up to ownership level and there’s still more than £10m separating the two sides.

Three targets. Three gaps. Same story every time: Arsenal’s number, and the other club’s number, sat miles apart.

Here’s my actual take: this isn’t a market problem, it’s an Arsenal problem. When every single negotiation ends up stuck at the valuation stage, that’s not bad luck three times running — that’s a policy. And policies don’t win you titles in August, they win you a squad that looks identical to last year’s when the whistle blows.

I get the logic. Don’t get done over on fees, protect the wage structure, don’t panic-buy. Fine, sensible, all of it. But there’s a version of “sensible” that just becomes an excuse for standing still, and Arsenal have been stood still for a few windows now while the actual gap to close — the one between them and the top of the table — hasn’t moved either.

Pre-season starts soon. If Trossard heading to Besiktas is the only actual outbound or inbound business by the time the season kicks off, I don’t think anyone at that club gets to call this a good window. Ambitious clubs pay the extra tenner million when it matters. We’re about to find out if this is one.

Where I could be wrong: if Arsenal land two of the three in the next fortnight, this whole take ages badly, and fast. Worth remembering before anyone screenshots it back at me in August.
