Antonelli's Lead Is Shrinking and Nobody's Talking About Why

Kimi Antonelli’s still top of the drivers’ championship — 179 points, five wins, five poles, genuinely excellent season for a driver who’s still finding his feet at this level. But the story right now isn’t the lead, it’s the direction of travel.

Silverstone: Antonelli finishes out of the points after a late mechanical issue. His own teammate, George Russell, finishes second. Charles Leclerc wins the race outright. And Lewis Hamilton — a name a lot of people had quietly written off for this year — comes home third.

That’s not one bad weekend. That’s Mercedes handing points back to the field at exactly the point in the season where a 25-point cushion stops looking comfortable and starts looking like a target painted on your back.

Thirteen rounds still to go, 341 points still up for grabs in the drivers’ standings. That’s not a formality, that’s basically two more full seasons’ worth of swing left in this thing.

My actual take: Antonelli’s still the favourite, but “still the favourite with a shrinking gap and a car that just broke down at your home race” is a very different sentence to “cruising to the title.” Mercedes need to sort whatever went wrong at Silverstone before Spa this weekend, or this stops being a coronation and starts being an actual fight — and if Hamilton’s genuinely back finding pace at the sharp end, this second half of the season just got a lot more interesting than the points table alone suggests.
